Scenario
In my Visitor Session data I am seeing multiple entries from the same visitor at the same time. Why is this happening?
Answer
Some companies have firewalls and spam filters which automatically crawl through links within emails to ensure they’re not leading to anything malicious.
These interactions with the links are sometimes recorded by PathFactory as visitor sessions; PathFactory performs light checks to determine whether a visit was initiated by a bot or a firewall (based on the IP Address or user agent) but this does not catch every instance.
How to tell which sessions are generated by firewalls and spam filters:
- Very short session times (ie. 0-15 seconds)
- Multiple sessions from the same visitor beginning at the exact same time (ie. 2 or more sessions)
